week 2:
the audience

week 2 challenges

We are doing a 4-day Challenge. Tues-Fri. 20-minutes per day. Let's get it.

Make sure you save your live stream when you finish streaming and share the link in the "Daily Challenge" channel on the CBY Discord. (worth 30 xp)

DAY 4 CHALLENGE (fri) : Warm Up To Risk (20 minutes)

Press go-live. Then worry about what you're going to do.

The final Challenge Day! Momentum is the key to all of this, it's obvious at this point. In the comfort of momentum, we can risk more easily because it's getting more familiar and more comfortable. For today's Challenge, find something just outside of the current "comfort zone" and try it in your 20 minutes. Just press go-live, and fill the time, as usual. But, risk something new. Try something that makes you a little uncomfortable. Find some new energy and lean in.

A vulnerable story. A controversial take. A half-written song. A conversation with a family member. A performance in public. Don't forget to choose your focus when your self-doubt kicks in. Root back to the moment. Find the breath. Risk more. Risk more!

DAY 1 CHALLENGE (tues) : Warm Up To Risk (20 minutes)

Press go-live. Then worry about what you're going to do.

Day 1 of our 4-day Challenge this week - We are adding the audience to our process this week. Day 1 is simple. Press go-live and see what happens. Just like our Week 1 Day 1 Challenge. Fill 20 minutes live on IG, FB, or TikTok. Keep practicing "choose your focus" and keep risking more. Pay attention to who shows up to watch OR ignore the camera completely. Let's do it!

It absolutely does not matter who shows up in your live, if no one shows up in your live, when you go live, or if you tell anyone you're going live. This is about moving into the "live" digital space with no expectation, practicing our process of accessing and rooting into the moment. Practicing moving out of thinking and into non-judment. Practicing risking more and taking bigger chances for an audience, or at the threat of an audience.

DAY 2 CHALLENGE (wed) : Warm Up To Risk (20 minutes)

Press go-live. Then worry about what you're going to do.

Day 2 of our 4-day Challenge this week - 20 minutes of music! Resist the urge to plan it. Press go-live and perform. Pay attention to who shows up OR ignore the camera completely. Can't wait to see these.

Still practicing rooting back into the moment. Choose your focus and risk more. Get uncomfortable. It absolutely does not matter who shows up in your live, if no one shows up in your live, when you go live, or if you tell anyone you're going live.

DAY 3 CHALLENGE (thurs) : Warm Up To Risk (20 minutes)

Press go-live. Then worry about what you're going to do.

Freeform. Tell stories or play music. We know the skills now. Let's use Day 3 and Day 4 to build more momentum by showing up for 20 minutes, showing your audience (or lack of audience) something interesting with a little bit of risk. Take some chances and see what happens.

We know the skills at this point so let's lean into more risk. If no one comes, it's a bigger opportunity to find the energy anyway. Do it for you, not them. This really mimics the energy we need when we DONT feel listened to or cared about on stage. We shouldn't get defeated in that situation. Instead, let's switch our focus from Audience to Artist. Do it for you, not them. Let's see this through! Keep working it.

week 2 session summary notes

  • Learned the Attention Model and the idea of the "sidedoor" approach to building an audience

  •  The Attention Model explains the method most Content Creators use to gain a following in 2021. Because every human now has a platform to gain attention on social media, and because of the speed of digital consumption, showing people "skill" is often to much of a challenge for a passive consumer scrolling past a piece of content. "Attention" is an easier method to grab people and earn their interest. An Artist can gain that attention using anything interesting, not just music.

  • The Side Door Approach is the strategy of choosing to present something other than your art on online in order to gain a following and then leveraging the audience you gain through the side door to introduce to your main objective - Your art.

  • Guided Warm Up and Meditation to practice the performance skills - The technical skill of focus and the expressive skill of risk using the "choose your focus" strategy and leaning into risk. These performance skills allow you to access and stay rooted in the moment in performance on stage, online, and in life.
